Football betting rules at Betika Bet
This guide explains the main football betting rules in Ethiopia and how football bet settlement may depend on the market selected. Before confirming a bet, check the market name, the period it covers, the event status and any special conditions shown on the bet slip. A market may be settled differently from another market on the same match.
These are general explanations, not a substitute for the rules attached to a specific bet. If this page and a market’s displayed terms differ, check the terms that apply to that market and the current Terms and Conditions. Betika Bet aims to settle football bets according to published market rules and official event data. If a settlement is unclear, you can contact Contact Us.
Standard settlement time: 90 minutes
Unless a market states otherwise, most match markets are settled on the result after 90 minutes of play, including stoppage time or added time allowed by the referee. This is often described as full time. It is not the same as extra time: extra time is played after the regular match period, usually in a knockout tie.
For 90 minutes football betting, the usual basis for Match Result (1X2), Double Chance, Total Goals, Handicap and Both Teams to Score is the score at the end of regulation time plus added time. Extra-time goals and a penalty shootout are normally outside those markets unless their terms expressly include them. Always use the wording on the selected market to confirm its settlement period.
When extra time counts
Extra time counts only when the market rules include it. Look for wording such as “including extra time”, “to qualify”, “winner of tie” or a market for the outright winner or team to lift the trophy. These selections can have a different settlement basis from a standard Match Result bet.
For example, a “Team A to qualify” market may be decided by the tie’s final outcome after extra time and, where applicable, a penalty shootout. A “Team A to win 1X2” selection generally refers to the result after 90 minutes and added time. For extra time football betting, do not rely on the competition format alone: check what the market says it covers.
How penalties are settled
A penalty awarded and taken during normal play is part of the match. If it results in a goal, it may count in goals markets for the period covered by that market. A penalty shootout is different: its kicks do not usually count as match goals for standard 90-minute totals.
Penalty shootout betting rules depend on the selected market. The shootout result may determine a “to qualify” or outright market when its terms include that outcome, but it does not normally change a 90-minute Match Result. Check whether the market refers to the match, the tie or the shootout before placing the bet.
Cancelled, postponed and abandoned matches
A cancelled football match bet, a postponed football match betting selection and a match that starts but is abandoned may be treated differently under the applicable rules. The event status, competition and market can matter. Do not assume a particular rescheduling window or automatic refund unless the relevant terms say so.
- Cancelled before kick-off: the selection may be void if the event does not take place, subject to the applicable market rules.
- Postponed before kick-off: a bet may remain open or be void, depending on the rules and the event’s status. Check the terms rather than assuming a fixed deadline.
- Abandoned after starting: some markets may already have a clear outcome, while others may depend on whether and when the match is completed. The rules for the specific market apply.
- Completed later or result corrected: settlement may depend on the official result and the applicable Terms and Conditions.
- Incorrect event details: if the date, teams or market appear wrong, do not rely on the displayed selection without checking the event information and applicable rules.
When a bet is declared void, the stake may be returned according to the applicable rules. A football betting void decision is not automatic in every disruption, and a refund stake should not be assumed until the bet status and terms have been checked.
Live football betting settlement
Live football betting rules need particular attention because the match can change while a selection is being submitted. A goal, red card, VAR review, penalty or dangerous attack may cause odds to change, a market suspension or a delay while the event is checked. A submitted selection may be accepted, offered at revised odds or rejected; placing it in the bet slip alone does not confirm acceptance.
Check the final odds and status shown on your bet slip. If a live event is being reviewed, wait for the market to reopen and confirm the details before proceeding. Visit Betika Bet live to view the live section.
Odds changes and bet confirmation
A football odds change before a bet is confirmed can affect whether the selection is accepted. The system may present updated odds for your approval or reject the bet under the applicable rules. The odds shown on an unconfirmed slip are not proof that a bet has been accepted.
Before confirming, review the event, market, selection, stake and displayed odds. This check is especially useful in live football, where events and prices can move quickly. After submission, check the bet status for confirmation and keep the details available if you need to ask about settlement.
VAR, official data and result corrections
VAR can lead to a goal being awarded or cancelled, a penalty decision being changed or a red card being reviewed. A market may be suspended while a decision is pending. Settlement should be checked against the relevant market rules and official event information, rather than a brief on-screen update or an assumption about the decision.
If an official result or event record changes after settlement, the handling of the bet is governed by Betika Bet’s Terms and Conditions. Review those terms for the applicable correction process. If you believe a settled bet does not match its market rules, contact support with the bet details.
Player, cards and corners markets
Special markets can use definitions that differ from standard match markets. Cards may be counted according to rules about eligible recipients, including whether cards to coaches or substitutes apply. Corner markets may depend on whether a corner is officially awarded and taken. For player markets, participation requirements can affect settlement; a selection may be void if a player does not take part, but this must be confirmed in the market rules.
An own goal is not usually credited as a goal by the player who put the ball into their own net, but the applicable player-market rules decide how it is settled. For cards, corners, player bets and other special selections, check the specific market rules before placing a bet.
Examples of football bet settlement
- Scenario: The score is 1–1 after 90 minutes and Team A wins in extra time. Settlement: A 90-minute 1X2 selection on Team A would not win on the basis of the extra-time result.
- Scenario: A match is 0–0 at full time, and Team B wins the shootout. Settlement: Over 0.5 Total Goals for the 90-minute period would lose; shootout kicks are not normally counted as match goals.
- Scenario: A match is cancelled before kick-off. Settlement: The selection may be void under the applicable rules; check the event status and terms for how the stake is handled.
- Scenario: A live selection is submitted while VAR is reviewing a possible goal. Settlement: The market may be suspended, or the selection may be accepted at revised odds or rejected. Check the confirmed bet status.
- Scenario: A “Team C to qualify” selection is placed in a knockout tie that goes to penalties. Settlement: The shootout may determine the selection if the market rules include qualification after extra time and penalties.
These examples explain common distinctions; the market terms shown when you place a bet determine its settlement.
Responsible football betting
Football betting should be entertainment, not a way to earn money. Only bet what you can afford to lose, and consider using available limits, breaks or self-exclusion tools if betting stops feeling manageable. Support information is available through Responsible Gaming. Betting is restricted to adults; read the Age Restriction Policy.
